Zoe Jane created an entire font out of her designs for Kraken using this awesome software called CALLIGRAPHR! I'll be using their software in class this year with my students! Check it out--you can create your own fonts too!!

I've been saying this wrong all day!
It's the FEMALE mosquito that bites. She uses the protein from the blood she takes to develop her eggs. I've been saying the wrong thing all day! I knew it sounded odd, but it's been crazy busy here! It was bugging me that I might be saying it wrong, so I had to stop and go check that again!!!!
When I'm super busy-- MYTHs sometimes stick better in my mind than FACTS! But it bugs me that I can't go back and say WAIT, I said that wrong!!!
So- here! ^ :-) "What Makes Mosquitoes Bite You? 8 Myths and Facts:"

Homework for 4th quarter!:
Your Last Mission of the year- < if you choose to accept it > ;-)
;-) *Order the Discovery Channel and watch our Team Kraken compete in Battlebots Season 3!* ;-)
The real assignment is actually,
"Think of some questions you would like answered that might help you to design your own robot for Battlebots- Season 4!!!!"
I am collecting videos of our students asking their questions, and while we are out there filming the show, I'll do my best to get a video of their favorite roboteers answering their questions!

I am using an awesome resource called Mystery Science.com to supplement this fascinating unit on the Human Body.
Click the links below to Dig Deeper into our unit on the Human Eye:
This round in the S.T.E.A.M. Lab, our students are creating a working model of a human eye!
Using these models, we will discover the basics of how our eyes work, and figure out some causes of vision problems.
One thing you can do to support your child’s curiosity about this topic is to have a discussion about any family members or friends who wear eyeglasses (or contact lenses). In this unit, we will learn why some people have blurry vision. We will also discuss how some people are nearsighted while others are farsighted.
Next Round: What do you think is special about nocturnal animal eyes that makes them able to see in the dark? Any ideas?

Human Eye Student Mission:
Your Human Eye Mission:
In this Human Eye Unit, you will learn about the human eye as well as technologies to enhance eyesight and how engineers play an important role in the development of these technologies.
Engineers design devices to help people with vision deficiencies. They also design tests and diagnostic equipment used to evaluate and investigate health conditions. To do this, they must thoroughly understand eye anatomy and function.
Before designing solutions to problems, engineers must conduct research and gather information. This step is a crucial part of the engineering design process.
I got the above text from another great resource I often use in class--Teach Engineering .com.

Light Side vs. Dark Side? Unlock your path and find your destiny.
Can you save BB-8 before he gets deactivated?
You're his only hope!
Oh no! While BB-8 was on a secret mission for the Resistance, the First Order found and abducted him. Luckily, he was able to send a distress signal the moment he was captured. The Resistance has been able to locate him in a small Coruscant junkyard. However, the rescue mission will not be easy. The First Order has set up 6 tricky codes that you will need to solve in order to unlock poor, BB-8.

My Microsoft Innovative Educator Badges as of Nov. 2017:
2nd Quarter Family Engineering Challenge:
This quarter we are learning about Rube Goldberg contraptions inspired by OK Go and Jiwi's Machines.
Your family engineering mission -- if you choose to accept it -- is to create a Rube Goldberg Machine-AND submit images and or a video of your progress.
Please use and discuss our 4 steps during the Engineering Design Process, Plan, Create, Test, Ask. ( & repeat, in any order)
You may also create a PowerPoint, Sway, Glogster, or any other type of digital method you feel comfortable documenting your progress with.
I will edit and use the best of the submitted digital projects in a special end of year video production.
You may email your file or a link to your file, or provide a Skype file for me. You may also feel free to ask me to help you, and I'll show you how I can obtain a digital version of your project.
Please provide an explanation of the final objective- (what does the machine do?), and I will accept these files up until May 11, 2018.
Here are some example videos of what is expected:
I especially love this one of Andrew explaining ALL the types of simple machines in his project!!!!
Douse a birthday candle,
Another-- more elaborate candle dousing,
How to crush a grape,
17 tries to wipe a dry erase board,
Audri's Machine-age 7

- Plan preliminary designs and drawings.
- Submit a series of progress photos that show the machine's evolution.
- Build a machine that accomplishes the stated task.
- Demonstrate the machine and create a verbal presentation, or be prepared to explain how your project works on film.

All teachers need pencils, so work carefully to build one.
Then give this sculpture to your teacher from August 14 - October 27!
You will be guaranteed to win your teacher’s heart straight away! ... ONYOURMARKGETSETGO!
Here are a few Hexastick reference videos to spark your creative mathematical flow:
