S.t.E.A.M. Lab
Year 1
2016-2017!

Guess what? I like Star Wars.--I teach at a K-8 Charter School and this site is only for school use, no products are sold or promoted here.
I found all the heading images online through Google image searches.-- NONE of the Star Wars header images on this Website are my own creation.

Robot Fashion Weeks:

The S.T.E.A.M. Lab has been super busy with students creating costumes for our Dash and Dot robots.
Students vote for the best costume in each class.
The winning costumes will debut in Runway Shows  from April 27th - May 4th (STAR WARS DAY!)
We will be filming all the Runway Shows, and 5th - 8th grade classes will begin editing the videos and adding special effects and music.

Mitch Seavey= 2017's Fastest and oldest champion on record!

 The Last Great Race!
Iditarod 2017!

This will be the third time in 4.5 decades this race has had to move north to Fairbanks, due to Climate Change in Alaska.
Click for a report on a village in my former school district BSSD.  This is Shishmaref.

Winter is ending...  (Note: Winter ends on March 20---the day we come back from "Spring Break")
...And the Iditarod is coming!
Choose your favorite Musher and we will track their progress with our Iditarod Insider Access.
The ceremonial start of the race begins in Anchorage on my birthday this year- March 4th, 2017!
Then mushers and dog teams travel 350 miles north to Fairbanks for the official start on March 6th.
Students will not get to track mushers all the way into Nome, but we will be tracking up until our Spring Break starting at the end of the school day on March 9th.
I hope students will check the news from March 14th- 15th to find out which mushers are closest to winning.
The first musher will likely be passing through the village of Golovin, AK between March 12th -14th. This is the village where ZJ & I lived for 3 years.
Golovin is only 90 miles from the finish line in Nome, AK!
The mushers will have a mandatory 8-hour rest in White Mountain after Golovin, then the only other checkpoint before the finish in Nome is Safety.
Dallas Seavey won the last 3 races, and his race time is the fastest yet.
Will he beat his record of just under 8.5 days? (8d 11h 20m 16s)
We will also be discussing what we can do to help our environment and how we might help to slow down Global Warming.

PERSEVERANCE!
Our Time Zone is EST- (Eastern Standard Time (EST) when observing standard time (autumn/winter) are 5 hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC−05:00):

Stay tuned to see who we will visit next!

For this Skype we will create Virtual Valentines and collaborate with another class somewhere on Earth. Students will create Virtual Valentines and conduct research on our partner classroom's community, calculate the miles between both classrooms, and virtually meet through a Skype or Google Hangout Call during an agreed upon time.

S.T.E.A.M. Gingerbread Community Project:

SkypE-ing with Our new Besties in Belarus!

Picture
Picture
This month we will participate in a global "gingerbread" community S.T.E.A.M. building project. The students must determine what resources need to be included in our model community (fire station, school, playground, hospital, grocery store, etc.)
During the S.T.E.A.M. Special rotations 12/7 -  12/14 we will build a model city surrounded by a train track, and each student will build and decorate a graham cracker train car to place on our track for a photo-- then he/she can take their creation home.
We are also curious to know what other classrooms think about communities, so we will be hosting Skype calls with students located in a variety of locations from around the globe to compare our communities.
However, we will need your help to collect supplies to create our "city"!
Before  our Skype calls begin, students must engineer an entire community out of graham crackers, icing, and healthy snacks, etc.
Please use this sign-up form to volunteer to help provide some of our required supplies.
This project will be a great way to learn about other communities!
I know this time of year is very busy, and any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
~Jedi Jill
